SPOTLIGHT ON: APPRENTICESHIPS WITH CITY OF BRISTOL COLLEGE

Apprenticeships continue to play a vital role in developing the next generation of construction professionals. The UK’s National Apprenticeship Week honours the positive impact these apprenticeships make in our industry and beyond.

For over 3 years, Lancer Scott has partnered with the City of Bristol College in identifying and developing young talent, while offering potential long-term careers in the world of construction and facilities management.

Providing hands-on experience and structured learning, apprentices can be found group-wide at Lancer Scott. For Ben Edwards, his apprenticeship in Facilities Management at the South West HQ provided a pathway into a permanent and senior role with the growing company, equipping him with skills needed to succeed.

What apprenticeship did you complete, and how did you find it?

I completed a Business Administration and Customer Service apprenticeship with the City of Bristol College. It allowed me to learn on the job, with a recognised qualification at the end. It helped me understand how businesses operate day to day and gave me practical experience that I could immediately apply in my role.

What did you learn during your apprenticeship that was most useful?

The most useful thing for me was how to manage my time effectively and prioritise tasks. I also developed strong communication and customer service skills, which have been essential in dealing with client queries, resolving issues, and working confidently with colleagues at all levels of the business.

How has Lancer Scott supported you during your career?

The team at Lancer Scott have given me numerous opportunities to develop, encouraged me to take on more responsibility, and progress within my team. I’ve been supported in building my skills, and the management team have been approachable and encouraging when it comes to training and development. I’m proud to say that in two years I have already achieved two promotions at the company, from Apprentice to my current role in Facilities Management as Senior Contract Support.

What do you enjoy the most about working as a Senior Contract Support?

It’s the variety. No two days are the same, and the role involves working closely with different teams, clients, and suppliers. I like being the central point of contact and knowing that my work helps keep contracts running smoothly and supports the wider facilities management team.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to someone starting out in their career?

Yes, it’s a great way to gain real experience while learning, especially if you prefer practical, hands-on work. It provides a solid foundation for career development and helps build confidence and knowledge at the same time. You will receive structured learning, and the guidance to help you succeed. The apprenticeship with City of Bristol College and Lancer Scott gave me the opportunity to join a career that I genuinely enjoy.

Allison Tomlin, Operations Manager, commented; “Working with City of Bristol College gave us a straightforward and supportive way to grow our team. From recruitment to ongoing development, we’ve been backed every step of the way. Our apprentices, like Ben, have brought fresh ideas, energy and a real willingness to learn that strengthens our culture and boosts moral. Ben’s journey is testament to his hard work and commitment but also highlights the importance of apprenticeships and how they contribute to the wider success of a company.”

Congratulations Ben!
