Meet the team: Sarah Charlton
Next in the spotlight is Sarah Charlton, our passionate Social Value Manager and CRM Co-ordinator. Joining our Bristol office in 2023, Sarah champions best practice and positive initiatives, and is a dedicated ambassador of our company values, regularly representing Lancer Scott at charity fundraisers, careers fairs, and local industry events that make a real difference to people’s lives.
- Can you tell us a bit about your role?
As a Social Value Manager, my role is all about ensuring our projects create a lasting and impactful outcome for the communities we work in, the environment, and the economy.
I work closely with our clients, subcontractors and local organisations to support a variety of initiatives, which can include providing local employment opportunities, championing sustainability initiatives, supporting young people, and working with charities and community groups. It’s all about making sure the work we do goes beyond construction and creates real benefits for people.
- What do you enjoy the most about working in the construction industry?
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is promoting construction careers to the younger generation and opening doors to people from all backgrounds.
I enjoy the social side and getting involved with the local community, witnessing firsthand the positive impact our projects have on people’s lives. For me, construction is about building more than just structures; it’s about building opportunities and stronger communities together.
- By championing best practice and social value, what challenges are you currently facing?
One of the challenges is making sure that everyone understands why social value matters. The importance of social value and for our community is critical to us, it’s what Lancer Scott’s values are built on. Our aim is to raise awareness for what we’re passionate about, what we’re proud of and what change we’re making.
Ensuring our team, clients and extended supply chain understand that we are not just “ticking boxes” is one of my main challenges. We’re committed to being better and doing better for our future, and communication plays a key role here.
- What advice would you give to someone looking to implement a company’s social and environmental initiatives?
Start by taking the time to really understand the local community and they people you want to help and then connect that with your company’s values to ensure that you are always representing them effectively. Build strong relationships, listen to their needs, set clear goals that are realistic but manageable, and make sure your actions are considered and reflect your values. Ensuring that all actions are thoughtful, consistent and meaningful is key for ensuring strategic positive change and lasting effects.
- What led you to choose a career as a Social Value Manager?
I believe businesses should create value beyond profit; it should be a natural part of how we work, not an optional extra. That’s what led me to a role where I can actively support community projects, track impact, and passionately drive positive change in a practical way. It’s meaningful work, and that’s what motivates me each day.
- How do you like to spend your time outside of the office?
Away from the office, I’m a busy mum to two daughters, the most rewarding part of my life. As a family, we love adventures in our motor home, travelling around the country and making memories that will last a lifetime. For me, it’s the perfect way to unwind at the weekends.
