Meet the Team: Ricky Thomas

Here we introduce you to our Senior Contracts Manager, Ricky Thomas, from our Cardiff fit out team. You’ll find Ricky managing many of our schemes across South Wales, ensuring excellent client care for a smooth and successful project delivery.

Let’s meet Ricky, in a quick-fire Q&A.

  1. Hello Ricky, can you tell us a bit about your role?

I’m responsible for overseeing the management and execution of high-value, often complex, large scale fit out projects. My primary role focuses on ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and fully compliant with all regulations and client specifications. I assist in leading a team of project managers, site managers and other professionals, providing guidance whilst maintaining strong relationships with clients, contractors, and subcontractors.

Beyond project execution, I work together with the business development team on new enquiries and tender opportunities, supporting company growth and long-term success.

  1. Can you share a bit about your background and experience in the industry?

With over 20 years’ experience in construction, my career so far has been diverse. I began in trade where I gained extensive hands-on, practical experience and then I successfully established and managed my own business. This provided me with a strong foundation in project management, managing timelines, budgets and relationships effectively.

Seeking broader opportunities overseas, I relocated to the Middle East, where I spent six years in the construction industry. During this time, I developed a keen interest in property management, which introduced a new dimension to my career, managing large property portfolios, collaborating with key stakeholders, and overseeing operational aspects of property development, leasing, and maintenance.

When I returned to South Wales, I transitioned my focus to commercial fit out, and over the past seven years, I have specialised in the delivery of high-quality interiors.

  1. What do you think makes a successful office fit out or refurbishment project?

Consistency, open communication and effective teamwork. These elements are crucial to ensure a project is delivered successfully on time, within budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.

Setting clear expectations from the outset, and together with a collaborative approach where project managers, designers, contractors, and suppliers work together towards a shared goal, streamlines decision making and problem solving and allows for creative solutions to any issues that may crop up.

  1. Are there any standout projects you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of?

I successfully managed a government scheme over an 18-month period, with a total project value of over £18 million. I also enjoyed delivering two high-end, luxury fit out and furniture projects at The Kensington Building in London, and at Bridge Water House in Bristol, each valued over £2 million.

  1. What do you enjoy most about working in this industry?

What I enjoy most is that no two days are the same. The variety of projects keeps me constantly engaged. I’m also a real people person, and enjoy interacting with clients and contractors, building strong relationships. Collaborating with diverse teams is what keeps the job exciting.

  1. And finally, when you’re not managing projects, how do you like to spend your time?

Outside of work, I am passionate about sports, both playing and watching. I’m an enthusiastic, albeit somewhat obsessed golfer (though I consider myself very average). I also enjoy travelling and spending time with my loved ones.
