At Lancer Scott, we are committed to developing the next generation of industry professionals through our apprenticeships. Our apprentices gain hands-on experience, industry-recognised qualifications, and valuable mentorship while working across various departments within the business.
To give you an insight into what it’s like to be an apprentice at Lancer Scott, we spoke to four of our current apprentices about their experiences, aspirations, and advice for future apprentices.
Meet Our Apprentices
- Ella Gregor – Marketing Apprentice
- Will Burt – Project Management Apprentice
- Dan Alsop – Business Administration Apprentice,
- Naima Ali – Transport Administration Apprentice
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
💬 Ella: My name is Ella Gregor, I’m 21 years old and currently working towards my Level 3 Marketing Apprenticeship. I studied media at GCSE and A-level, and I want to pursue my dream job in marketing. I use social media in my spare time and take photos of almost everything!
💬 Will: I’m 20 years old from Cardiff. I joined Lancer Scott over three months ago and I’m studying a Level 4 HNC in Construction Management at Cardiff and Vale College. I started out in plastering and worked my way up through qualifications before deciding to pursue a role in construction management.
💬 Dan: Hi, I’m Dan Alsop, I’m 23 years old, and I’m completing a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship. Before this, I earned a degree in Media and Communications from Swansea University. Outside of work, I love music (especially singing Tears for Fears songs very loudly), playing tennis, and anything related to Doctor Who, Marvel, or Star Wars!
💬 Naima: My name is Naima, I’m 17 years old, and I’m doing a Business Administration Apprenticeship at Lancer Scott. In the future, I’d love to become an Endocrinologist, helping children with Type 1 diabetes like myself.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
💬 Ella: University didn’t appeal to me, and I don’t do well in exam environments. With an apprenticeship, I gain practical experience while learning, and it doesn’t feel like I’m just “studying.” Plus, I only have one exam!
💬 Will: I initially thought I’d be a plasterer for life, but my tutor encouraged me to explore higher-level roles. He explained the benefits of apprenticeships, and I realized I’d learn much more by combining study with real-life experience.
💬 Dan: After university, I struggled to find work due to a lack of experience. With an apprenticeship, I get to learn in a real work environment while gaining the experience that employers look for.
💬 Naima: I wanted a more practical approach to learning. Sixth form felt repetitive and didn’t challenge me enough. An apprenticeship allows me to develop real-world skills and build confidence while preparing for my future.
Tell us about your role – what does a typical day look like?
💬 Ella: Every Monday, I plan my week and prioritize tasks. I have regular 1-2-1 meetings with my tutor, and we typically post on social media mid-week. Fridays are my dedicated apprenticeship day for coursework.
💬 Will: I rotate between different roles to gain experience. Right now, I’m learning take-offs (measuring materials and labor for projects) using a scaled ruler. I also work with the estimating department and visit sites to gather information for project budgets.
💬 Dan: I work at reception, answering phones and booking meeting rooms. I also set up and replace phones/tablets for engineers. I’ve taken on extra responsibilities in different departments, which helps me gain varied experience.
💬 Naima: My role in Transport involves handling PCNs, car insurance, vehicle hires, tax renewals, and ensuring our company vehicles run efficiently. No two days are the same!
How has Lancer Scott supported you in your apprenticeship?
💬 Ella: I have dedicated time on Fridays to focus on my coursework, a work laptop for my studies, and great support from my manager Nia, who reviews my work and answers my questions quickly.
💬 Will: The flexibility to try different roles has been fantastic. I’ve learned so much about construction and different departments. The experienced people here have passed down valuable knowledge that I can apply to both work and my coursework.
💬 Dan: Lancer Scott has given me opportunities to increase my off-the-job learning hours, which is a crucial part of an apprenticeship. I’ve gained experience across different tasks, making my learning more hands-on.
💬 Naima: They have provided me with diverse challenges, helping me build confidence—especially with public speaking. They’re also flexible, allowing me to manage my college work alongside my job.
What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?
💬 Ella: The ability to learn while working, experiment with ideas, and gain real-world experience in marketing. My advice? Don’t be afraid to share your ideas—they might turn into something successful!
💬 Will: Applying what I learn in college directly to my work helps me understand tasks better. Also, finishing my degree while already being employed puts me ahead of full-time university students.
💬 Dan: Learning within a workplace setting—nothing beats hands-on experience! My advice for future apprentices? Stay enthusiastic and look for opportunities to develop new skills.
💬 Naima: Gaining both practical experience and professional skills. My advice? Keep an open mind—every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn.
What are your plans for the future?
💬 Ella: I’d love to stay at Lancer Scott and develop my marketing knowledge further. In the long term, I aspire to become a Marketing Manager, ideally in construction or retail/fashion.
💬 Will: My goal is to complete my degree in the next three years—whether in Project Management or Estimating, depending on where my interests take me. I see myself progressing within Lancer Scott.
💬 Dan: I’m keeping my options open but hope to secure a full-time role—maybe at Lancer Scott—once I complete my apprenticeship.
💬 Naima: I plan to go to university and study Endocrinology. While it’s a big shift from my current role, the skills I’ve gained will help me in my future career.
